March began with a big development for the University of Oregon’s New Partnership proposal, as an overflow crowd filled two hearing rooms at the state capitol to discuss SB 559 and SJR 20, the New Partnership legislation. The meeting of the Senate Education and Workforce Development committee focused entirely on the New Partnership.

The University of Oregon launched a week-long campaign to promote positive body image. Positive body image is considered to be a person's clear, true perception of his or her shape, and the celebration and appreciation of natural body shape.

Sparking Girls to Be Scientists
In an experiment, two women took a hearing-aid battery, a pager motor, a toothbrush and an 11-year-old with roses embroidered on her jeans to test whether they could create something enduring. The female scientists did their work at the four-hour Girls’ Science Adventures workshop on the University of Oregon campus.

The UO Chamber Choir to Perform in Tallin, Estonia
The UO Chamber Choir, directed by Sharon Paul, has been selected to perform at the 12th International Choral Festival in Tallin, Estonia. This is an extremely prestigious event, featuring 50 choirs from 14 countries… and the UO Chamber Choir is the only one from the United States.

Frohnmayer Award for Public Service Goes to Duncan Campbell ’73
Duncan Campbell ’73 will receive the University Of Oregon School Of Law's Frohnmayer Award for Public Service during a ceremony at 6:00 p.m. Friday, April 8, at The Nines in Portland. Campbell is a Portland native who is the founder and chairman emeritus of The Campbell Group, a timberland investment firm. He is also an attorney at law and certified public accountant.

UO and Smithsonian Scholars Make New Discovery
Evidence for a diversified sea-based economy among North American inhabitants dating from 12,200 to 11,400 years ago is emerging from three sites on California's Channel Islands. Reporting in the March 4 issue of Science, a 15-member team led by University of Oregon and Smithsonian Institution scholars describes the discovery of scores of stemmed projectile points and crescents dating to that time period. The artifacts are associated with the remains of shellfish, seals, geese, cormorants and fish.
