Architecture Students Designing Salem Police Station Project

Twenty-four University of Oregon architecture students took on a daunting task: design Salem's 1970s-era civic center campus as an icon for the city. Two architecture studio classes were charged with designing a new building for Salem's police department and redesigning the civic center to be more navigable and accessible.

Marshall Scholarship Granted to Honors College Senior

Throughout the distinguished Marshall Scholarship's 57-year history, only three past University students have ever seized the prestigious award. University senior Josh Lupton is now number four. The scholarship allows Lupton, a biology and human physiology double-major, to attend the University of Cambridge for two years starting next fall, where he plans to focus his education on biology and public health.

Oregon Daily Emerald Football Book to Head Overseas

Student journalists at the University of Oregon's campus paper, the Oregon Daily Emerald, are extending the ripple effect of the university football team's run to the national title game. With the book scheduled to appear just two weeks after the game in Glendale, Ariz., the Emerald is teaming with Operation Homefront, a support organization for soldiers and their families, to provide free copies to Oregon military personnel serving in the Middle East and elsewhere around the globe.

Elyse Fenton MFA ’07 Wins Dylan Thomas Prize

Elyse Fenton, a poet who graduated from Reed College and received an MFA from the University of Oregon, won the Dylan Thomas Prize, a $30,000 prize given to a writer under 30. The prize was given to Fenton in Wales earlier this month.

Amanda Marshall ’92 Nominated for Oregon’s Top Federal Prosecutor

President Barack Obama nominated Amanda Marshall ’92 for Oregon's Department of Justice as the state's top federal prosecutor and the sheriff of Lane County as its new U.S. marshal. If confirmed, Amanda Marshall will replace Dwight C. Holton, who was named as Oregon's interim U.S. attorney in February.

After what he calls "a thousand years" of learning, teaching and writing about law, Robert S. Summers, the William G. McRoberts Professor of Research in the Administration of Law, taught his last class on Dec. 1st.

Robert Thompson ’77 Creates a New Front Door for the University

For Robert Thompson ’77, designing the new Matthew Knight Arena was “the commission of a lifetime.” After graduating from the University of Oregon, Thompson founded Portland-based TVA Architects in 1984, and has since earned more than 50 national and international design awards. Soon after opening, his fledgling firm won the design contract for Nike’s world headquarters in Beaverton.

Ducks, Tigers Team up Against Hunger

Prior to competing in the BCS Championship game, Auburn University and the University of Oregon teamed up for a food bank service project at St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance in Phoenix. Over 200 fans, family members, university officials, and school bands sorted donated food and packed emergency food boxes on an assembly line for those in need in the Arizona community.

The Dawn of Knight

The Matthew Knight Arena represents the hopes, dreams, hard work and investments, both financial and emotional, of scores of people, from major donors such as Phil and Penny Knight and Pat Kilkenny, to the leadership of the University of Oregon and its Department of Athletics, to architects, builders and the 1,890 workers who toiled on the project in some way.

RG Columnist Says Goodbye to Mac Court

It was fitting that my walk to attend the final men’s basketball game at the University of Oregon’s McArthur Court was through the Pioneer Cemetery. The experience evoked at least a touch of death. Many of the game’s 7,165 fans, after all, were saying goodbye to a place that’s provided us decades of fond memories.

Defeat didn't last long for the University of Oregon Ducks and their head coach Chip Kelly as the second-year mentor was named the American Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year a day after UO fell to Auburn on a last-second field goal in the BCS Championship Game.

UOAA, Cheerleaders and the Duck Appear on Today Show

The University of Oregon Alumni Association (UOAA) appeared on the Today Show on December 15th during the 'Helping Those Who Serve America' segment to present a gift to Michael and Lacey Bryant for their efforts in housing and assisting homeless veterans. The UOAA, along with the Duck and the U of O Cheerleaders, gave the couple an all expense paid trip to Glendale for the upcoming BCS championship game on January 10th.

Aubrey Ardema ’97 Hosts Oregon Wine Tasting In Denver

As an Oregon Duck in Denver, Aubrey has taken it upon herself to bring more of Oregon to Duck fans in Denver. “I decided to host because I thought it would be a fun event to do with my fellow Ducks. I loved my time at the University of Oregon, and by participating in the Alumni Association and making connections with local Ducks, I get to stay connected with that experience.”

Arizona Chapter Gives Back

The Duck and UO Cheerleading Squad visited Thew Elementary on Friday, January 7th. Thew Elementary's 3rd grade class adopted The University of Oregon earlier this year as a tool to help students be encouraged that after high school comes college. Members of the Arizona Chapter have been giving back to this special group of 3rd graders by volunteering their time in the classroom as well donating UO decorations to get their classroom "All Ducked Out" for the 2010-2011 school year.
