The UO Chamber Choir to Perform in Tallin, Estonia
The UO Chamber Choir, directed by Sharon Paul, has been selected to perform at the 12th International Choral Festival in Tallin, Estonia. This is an extremely prestigious event, featuring 50 choirs from 14 countries… and the UO Chamber Choir is the only one from the United States.
The invitation to audition came from Estonian choral guru Hirvo Surva, who was at the UO in 2006 for our Music Today Festival, and again for a brief residency in 2009. He heard the UO Chamber Choir both times, was very impressed, and recommended them for an audition.
The choir will take a wide range of repertoire on its tour, including Renaissance music by Claudio Monteverdi and Carlo Gesualdo, American spirituals, and sacred music ranging from Johannes Brahms to Billy Joel. The choir will also perform some modern songs of faith and praise, including “Omnis Spiritus” by UO composition professor Robert Kyr, written especially for the tour. In addition to the big choral fest in Tallin, the Chamber Choir will also give a performance in Tartu, Estonia, and in Helsinki, Finland.
The tour dates are April 10-19, 2011. The Chamber Choir will give a preview performance of its tour program on Thursday, April 7 at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets are $7 general admission, $5 for students and senior citizens. After the tour, the choir will perform the program in a free concert at the Tower Theatre in Bend, OR on Thursday, April 28 at 7 p.m. The UO Alumni Assn. is co-sponsoring that event.
