Help Keep the New Partnership Discussion Moving Forward
March began with a big development for the University of Oregon’s New Partnership proposal, as an overflow crowd filled two hearing rooms at the state capitol to discuss SB 559 and SJR 20, the New Partnership legislation. The meeting of the Senate Education and Workforce Development committee focused entirely on the New Partnership.
After supportive remarks from senate backers, and an introduction to the proposal by UO President Richard Lariviere, supporters made their case in front of a capacity crowd.
Thanks to the work of the Alumni Association, and UOAA board members, a wide array of higher education supporters was on hand to testify in support of the measures. Business and community leaders, educators, parents, and faculty joined with students to argue that now is the time for bold higher education reforms.
The New Partnership, SB 559 and SJR 20 are reform bills to stabilize university funding, stop tuition hikes, and create a more accountable public governing board for the university. More information can be found by visiting newpartnership.uoalumni.com
While the important reforms proposed by the university have picked up traction, much more is needed to ensure they keep working forward. We ask all alumni to SAVE THE DATE for Friday, April 15, for the traditional UO Day at the Capitol. This event is a fun opportunity to support the university, learn about current developments at the university, and talk with your elected representatives about the importance of higher education. The event will begin at 9:15am and run into the afternoon. More details will follow. For more information about the New Partnership, or about the April 15 UO Day at the Capitol, contact advocacy@uoalumni.com or sign-up online. Thanks for all you do for the University of Oregon.
