AfFORDing a New Campus Experience

Come May, the new Cheryl Ramberg Ford and Allyn Ford Alumni Center will open its doors, making it the final peg in the triumvirate of east campus buildings many are calling the new gateway to the University of Oregon. The Matthew Knight Arena, which opened in January, and the Jaqua Center for Student Athletes, which opened in winter 2010, make up the other two pieces of the trio. However, it’s at the alumni center where most visitors, former Ducks, and future Ducks will get their first impressions of an ever-changing UO campus.

Campus News

Architecture-Business Team Honored in North American Competition

A team of UO landscape architecture, architecture and business administration students placed in the top 11 in an urban design competition that drew 153 entries from the United States and Canada for a project in Seattle. More than 700 students representing 60 universities competed for $80,000 in prizes. The UO team’s submission was singled out for its excellence in sustainability focused on rain and graywater re-use.

Quidditch Bristles Totally Chafe Your Legs

If you’re planning on mounting a broomstick any time soon, you should consider wearing tights. “The bristles totally chafe your legs,” said Patrick Millegan, who is a member of the University of Oregon’s Muggle Quidditch League.

MBAs Meet Seattle Execs

Early last month, a group of first-year MBA students in the Lundquist Center for Entrepreneurship hit the road and headed north to meet with executives from thirteen companies, including Amazon, Cascade Designs, Microsoft, and Valve. Hearing successful entrepreneurs discuss their companies and their own career paths was an exciting opportunity.

The UO Class of 1961 will commemorate the golden anniversary of their graduation on October 28-29 with fellow classmates at a series of events including presentations, a campus tour, lunch, banquet and tailgate party before the WSU v UO football game.

Jeff Eager may be relatively new to the practice of law, but has quickly established himself as a rising star of the Oregon Bar. On January 5, 2011, at age 35 and with an already impressive record of public service under his belt, Eager was appointed the Mayor of Bend, Oregon.

Tom McNab ’75 Wins Montana State University President’s Award

Montana State University has awarded Tom McNab ’75 with the 2011 President’s Award for Excellence in Service Learning during the University’s Awards for Excellence banquet. McNab is the Director of the School of Architecture’s Community Design Center and an Assistant Adjunct Professor. He accepted the award as a proud Duck on February 22 in Bozeman, Montana.

Elisabeth Walton Potter ’60 to Receive McMath Award

Elisabeth Walton Potter of Salem is the recipient of the University of Oregon’s 2011 George McMath Award. Potter’s longtime role as a public historian specializing in architectural history and historic preservation has earned her high praise and recognition.

Students Break with Spring Break Tradition

While many college students view spring break as a chance to kick back and relax, dozens of University of Oregon students are using the week to learn and lend a hand. The UO's Alternative Break program facilitates immersion-based experiences to give students first-hand accounts of civic service, social change and cultural understanding.

Building a Bike Shelter and Community Relationships

A new bike shelter is rising quickly in the parking lot of Camas Ridge Community School on 1150 East 29th Avenue in Eugene thanks to collaboration between parents, school administrators, and a team of architecture students. The students are members of designBridge, a student organization in the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts (A&AA) that offers design/build services to local community members and organizations.

University of Oregon President Richard Lariviere has announced that he will focus on education reforms advocated by Gov. John Kitzhaber during the current legislative session, then shift to the UO’s New Partnership proposal as a second step in the reform process for 2012.

The Women in Athletics Celebration is finally here! On the evening of May 7th, the UO will be presenting varsity letters to all female-athletes who participated at the University of Oregon prior to 1981. The evening will begin with a 5:30pm social hour followed by a 6:30pm dinner and 7:00pm letter presentation.

Green Mile! Ducks Win Back-to-Back NCAA Titles

Oregon went the extra mile — three times — to win its second consecutive women's NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Gilliam Indoor Stadium. The Ducks used a dominating 1-3-4 finish in the mile by Jordan Hasay, Zoe Buckman and Anne Kesselring to all-but-lock up the 2011 crown. Oregon made it official when Amber Purvis finished sixth in the 60 meters, and then enjoyed the rest of the meet, including a punctuating win by Jordan Hasay in the 3,000 meters. (Photo: ksby.com)

It’s a Track Reunion Weekend

On Friday, May 6 at 6pm Coach Vin Lananna and Reunion Chairs Scott Daggatt and Geoff Hollister invite men and women track and field and cross-country alumni to a reunion gathering at the Bowerman Building, Hayward Field, during the Oregon Twilight Meet. $50 per person includes food, beverages and complimentary childcare will be available to children under 12 years old.

Ducks win CBI title, With Home-Court Help

That other postseason basketball tournament can only hope for an ending like this. After the invisible and controversial halfcourt line at Matthew Knight Arena reached up and tripped the Creighton Bluejays, Oregon's E.J. Singler knocked down a bank shot with two seconds left to give the Ducks a 71-69 victory Friday night and the CBI Tournament championship.

Verne Wheelwright, PhD. ’57: “It’s YOUR Future, Make it a Good One!”

Vern Wheelwright PhD ’57 spoke about "Leadership and the Long-term Perspective" at the World HRD Congress in Mumbai February 11, where he received the "Future Leadership" award. Wheelwright is the author of "It's YOUR Future, Make it a Good One!" which explains how individuals can learn and use methods for exploring the future. In Mumbai, Wheelwright showed how personal methods can help leaders develop a long-term perspective.

Scott Gummer ’86

In addition to writing and project managing Mac Court Memories, Gummer was Executive Editor of the recently published Portland Trail Blazers official 40th anniversary and Dallas Cowboys 50th anniversary coffee table books. He also wrote a season ticket holder gift book for the Los Angeles Angels, edited the forthcoming San Francisco Giants official World Series commemorative book, and he now has a novel coming out April 12. Published by Touchstone/Simon and Schuster titled Parents Behaving Badly, the book is a satire about parents behaving badly at youth sports.

In Memoriam

Ken Johnson ’55

A former journalist who advised four Oregon governors has died at age 82. Ken Johnson most prominently advised Democrat Bob Straub, who was Oregon's state treasurer from 1965 to 1973 and governor from 1975 to 1979. The Statesman-Journal newspaper says Johnson also served as an adviser to three other governors, Democrat Robert Holmes, Republican Tom McCall and Democrat Neil Goldschmidt.

Mickey Bruce ’62

Mickey Bruce ’62, a former University of Oregon defensive back and later a winner of the UO’s Leo Harris Award, presented annually to an alumni letterman who has demonstrated 20 years of achievement and service to the community since graduation, died last Sunday in Oroville, Calif., at age 70.

University of Oregon Senior Alexis Pennington

Pennington, a University senior and business administration major, died of meningoencephalitis on March 6 at Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield. The 22-year-old Marist High School graduate was a member of the University's water polo team and International Business and Economics Club, and had a great passion for skiing and outdoor activities.

When Bill Bowerman's family began a remodeling project, little did they know they’d unearth the single item most responsible for the launch and success of the Nike empire. “Everyone, including Mrs. Bowerman thought it was thrown away," said Scott Reames, Nike’s Director of Archives. “We never expected to see it decades later.”

Oregon Ducks to be Grand Marshal of Portland Rose Parade

The Portland Rose Festival invited the Oregon Ducks football team to serve as Grand Marshal for the 2011 Spirit Mountain Casino Grand Floral Parade on June 11. Acknowledging the importance of the University of Oregon and the team’s achievement the last couple of years, Sue Bunday, 2011 Portland Rose Festival Foundation president, presented UO President Richard Lariviere and the Oregon Duck mascot with bouquets of roses at an announcement event on campus.

Sustainable Cities Police Station Project Wins Architecture Prize

A public-private partnership that brought together the City of Salem, the University of Oregon and two architecture firms to design a new Salem police station has resulted in a $7,500 cash prize to UO from a national architecture organization. The UO’s Sustainable Cities Initiative (SCI) is being honored by the National Council of Architecture Registration Boards (NCARB), which gives out the yearly prize to projects that represent unique efforts to combine architecture education and practice.

Spanish: Found in Translation-Associate Prof David Wacks

One of the benefits of attending a research university like the UO is that students take classes with professors who are in the process of redefining their fields. Associate Professor David Wacks is one of those professors. In his Spanish classes, Wacks regularly introduces new texts and materials that have rarely been taught to U.S. undergraduates.

Carole Daly Marks Twenty-Five Years of Fundraising

Carole Daly's extensive fundraising career began in 1986 as a Development Officer in the Lundquist College of Business. Moving to Central Development in 1998, she worked as Annual Gift Director, Regional Major Gift Officer, and Leadership Gift Officer. Carole was recently promoted to Assistant Vice President for the Annual, Regional, and Special Gifts programs.

Cheryl Ramberg Ford and Allyn Ford join their nieces Danika Webb and Heather Hedges in front of the Ford Alumni Center. Move-in to the new facility is scheduled to begin May 14th with a formal building dedication in the works on June 10th. Watch for details in the May UOAA enews.

That Dr. Lariviere will be a featured speaker at the annual National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education (NCORE) Conference May 31st through June 4th in San Francisco. President Lariviere will be part of a full day Presidents’ Symposium where a panel of five University presidents will discuss their leadership experiences and efforts in a related area: the internationalization of their institution’s efforts to expose students and faculty to other cultures.

The Department of Art and The School of Architecture and Allied Arts will present a MFA thesis presentation of the works of nine graduate art students at Disjecta Interdisciplinary Art Center.
