UO Catering Hosts Faculty-Staff Open House at Ford Alumni Center
University of Oregon faculty and staff got a sneak-peek of the Cheryl Ramberg Ford & Allyn Ford Alumni Center on May 26th. The 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. open house at the new facility featured complimentary food, beverages and social time with colleagues, with University Catering using the event to introduce fresh, new menu items and service concepts.

Students Share Research and Findings at National Solar Conference
Eight UO architecture students joined top researchers in North Carolina from May17-21 to present research findings on renewable energy to thousands of professionals from across the country. The 40th annual ASES National Solar Conference was hosted by nationally renowned clean-energy innovator American Solar Energy Society. In addition to presenting their own peer-edited research, the UO students received real-world feedback in a room full of the field’s most respected professionals.

Women and Gender Presentations a Hit at Local Schools
The Center for the Study of Women in Society (CSWS) is playing an active community role in promoting graduate student research on women and gender by sending UO graduate students into Eugene School District 4J classrooms through the Road Scholars Program. This year, CSWS has expanded the program to include the Springfield Public Library and the OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute.

Finance Education Program Names Director
Jeffrey B. DeBoer, former CFO of Lithia Motors, is joining the University of Oregon Lundquist College of Business as managing director of the Securities Analysis Center. "From economic to governance and regulatory challenges, all aspects of capital formation and management are in flux. The University of Oregon's Securities Analysis Center takes an innovative holistic approach-breaking down the traditional silos in the financial industry among corporate finance, risk management, commercial banking and investment management," said DeBoer.

Balda to Lead PDX Executive Ed Expansion
The University of Oregon Lundquist College of Business has named Dr. Wes Balda assistant dean for Portland programs, including the twenty-six-year-old Oregon Executive MBA. Charged with leading the college's efforts to engage Portland and Northwest businesses in new ways, Balda will oversee the creation of a "building block" model of executive education--one that is currently offered by only a few other executive MBA programs in the world.

Daniel Toole ’08 to Study Climate-Responsive Models in 10 Countries
A 2008 University of Oregon architecture graduate will travel to 10 countries in Southern Europe and Scandinavia this summer on a 12-week, $10,000 fellowship to catalog climate-responsive models of urbanism, landscape and infrastructure in northern and southern Europe.

Jerry Lee ’73 Receives 2011 Presidential Volunteer Service Award
Jerry Quinn Lee ’73 received a 2011 presented by President Barack Obama’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. The award recognizes Lee’s commitment to serving his community and inspiring others to engage in volunteer service. “Your volunteer service demonstrates the kind of commitment to your community that moves America a step closer to its great promise,” states President Obama in his congratulatory letter to Lee.

Foster Care Advocacy Team Led by UO Student
Jamie Hinsz attends the UO and started the Foster Care Advocacy Team, also known as F-Cat. F-Cat is collecting socks for foster children and hopes to have at least one pair per foster child in the county. Because they already have more than 800 pairs, Hinsz says now they aim to collect enough packs to give to each child in need.

Bike & Build Benefits Affordable Housing
This summer, Mitzi Liu ’10 will spend two weeks cycling over 500 miles from Richmond, VA to Philadelphia, PA to support the affordable housing cause. En-route she will be dedicating four days to working on construction sites with Habitat for Humanity affiliates and Rebuilding Together Philadelphia to build affordable homes. Her humanitarian adventure is called the Capital Ride, and it is organized through Bike & Build.

The 2011 anthology of writings on religious architecture, “Pope Benedict XVI and Beauty in Sacred Art and Architecture,” includes a chapter on new American Catholic Architecture written by Ethan Anthony ’80. Long Awaited Varsity Letters Presented to Women Athletes
Becky Sisley tried her darnedest to make Saturday's long-awaited (about 70 years) celebration of Oregon's pioneer women athletes last all night. And she got a standing ovation for it. The University of Oregon's first women's athletic director (1973-79) pinballed from table to table at Matthew Knight Arena during the meal portion of the event, gabbing happily with athletes she coached and those on whose behalf she tangled with administrative roadblocks to her program.

The Fire Still Burns for Casey Martin
The 10 members of the University of Oregon golf team sit scattered across the floor and the two beds of a hotel room. They have just traveled together, three hours in three cars, from Eugene to Bandon, to participate in a two-day tournament at the seaside links resort known as Bandon Dunes. The players come in all shapes and sizes, and a variety of colors, too. It is the night before the practice round, and their coach wants to talk strategy. "Off the green, you chipping or putting?" the coach asks.

Ducks Defend Pac-10 Track Titles
So much for the form charts for the Pac-10 track and field championships. Oregon's men capped a near wire-to-wire victory with wins from Mike Berry in the 400 meters and Matthew Centrowitz in the 1,500 meters, while the women overcame the disqualification of its top-seeded 4x100 meter relay team to rally from a 57.5-point deficit, and both teams emerged victorious Saturday night at Drachman Stadium.

Softball Players Rack Up All-Pac-10 Honors
In return for helping the No. 11 University of Oregon softball team to one of its best regular seasons ever, eight Ducks were selected to the All-Pac-10 Teams. Sophomore pitcher Jessica Moore picked up her first All-Pac-10 First-Team honor, while senior Monique Fuiava was a Second-Team choice. Four others added honorable mention status - freshman Courtney Ceo, sophomore Samantha Pappas and seniors Brittany Rumfelt and Kaitlin Vitek.

Oregon Law Professor named Fulbright Scholar
Oregon Law Professor Carrie Leonetti recently was awarded a 2011-12 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award. The prestigious award will allow the criminal law expert to spend a year in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, where she will engage in active research and teaching in the areas of forensic science, police investigations, and criminal adjudication. The focus of her research will be on eyewitness identification.

UO Chemist Elected to National Academy of Sciences
University of Oregon chemist Geraldine "Geri" Richmond is among 72 U.S. scientists elected into membership of the National Academy of Sciences. Richmond joins six other UO faculty among the academy's current roster of 2,000 active members. Membership in the NAS is one of the highest honors given to a scientist or engineer in the United States. The new members will be inducted into the academy next April during its 149th annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

UO Archeologists Find 19th Century Fort Klamath Barracks
Archeologists have used ground-penetrating radar to determine exactly where a Fort Klamath soldier barracks stood in the late 19th century. "It's a pretty exciting moment," said Todd Kepple, Klamath County Museums manager. "No trace of this building was visible for the 44 years the county has owned this property. We had no idea exactly where anything was except for the flag pole."

UO Researchers Design Nanoflowers to Help Blind People Regain Vision
A University of Oregon research team led by Richard Taylor is designing nanoflowers that will enable blind people including those afflicted by macular degeneration to regain vision. The nanoflowers will be fabricated from metal nano-particles that grow or naturally arrange themselves by a technique called diffusion limited aggregation. These are also known as fractals and will effectively simulate and interact with neurons.

Nicholas V. Riasanovsky ’42
Nicholas V. Riasanovsky, a Russian émigré who came to the United States at 14, served in the Army during World War II and became one of the country’s leading scholars of Russian history, writing a college textbook that served as the American standard for teaching Russian history during the cold war, died on May 14 in Oakland, Calif. Economics Professor Robert E. Smith
On May 12th 2011, Robert Edward Smith (Bob), just five months shy of his 90th birthday, passed away in Bend, Oregon. His personal and professional curriculum vitae was long and varied. His studies took him from Norfolk to Harvard to Berkeley to USC, and eventually to UCLA where he earned his PhD in economics. He was a distinguished member of the faculty at the University of Oregon.

UO Benefactor Donna Woolley
The university community was saddened to learn of the death of its longtime friend and benefactor, Donna Woolley, on February 25 from heart failure. She was eighty-five. A lifelong Oregon resident and Eugene businesswoman, Donna served as a UO Foundation Trustee from 1979 to 1989 and was an active emerita trustee since 1989.

Bach Festival Bargain for PDX Ducks
Based in Eugene, the UO’s Oregon Bach Festival is now producing its Grammy-winning music in three more Oregon cities June 23-July 10, adding a concert in Ashland to go with Bend and a new, five-concert “mini-fest” in Portland. Eugene headliners include superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma June 23; OBF cofounder Helmuth Rilling leading the mighty Brahms Requiem June 26; and on July 2, conductor Marin Alsop’s theatrical version of “Joan of Arc,” a spectacular choral work with lighting, stage effects, and actors from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Chapters Engage Alumni across the US
UOAA alumni chapter members are hard at work organizing and hosting events throughout the year. Recently, the Portland chapter hosted a young alumni event at Davis Street Tavern to promote career networking. A panel of five alums from diverse Portland job backgrounds offered their experiences after graduation and provided advice for the young alums looking for career advice.

Alumni Perspective: Taking a Different Route
Stefani Jenness ’10 was recently hired as a sales associate for Alpha Broadcasting, a company that operates six radio stations in the Portland area. Although excited to be starting a career, this job opportunity came nearly one year after graduation. Stefani graduated from the UO with a BA in Journalism and Communication (with a focus in public relations), a minor in business, a Semester at Sea study abroad experience and an internship at the UO Career Center in Portland under her belt.

Summer in the City of Portland
Summer in the City 2011 is the School of Architecture and Allied Arts in Portland offering of special summer courses in the fields of art and digital art, architecture, product design, landscape architecture, and interdisciplinary studies. The summer program is housed at the university’s White Stag Block in Portland, Oregon. Summer in the City offers variable-credit courses and workshops with courses taught by guest artists, architects, and creative design professionals from throughout the Northwest region as well as by University of Oregon professors who collaborate during the summer to offer challenging, enlightening, and informative curriculum during the short summer session.
