Jerry Lee ’73 Receives 2011 Presidential Volunteer Service Award

Jerry Quinn Lee ’73 received a 2011 presented by President Barack Obama’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. The award recognizes Lee’s commitment to serving his community and inspiring others to engage in volunteer service.

“Your volunteer service demonstrates the kind of commitment to your community that moves America a step closer to its great promise,” states President Obama in his congratulatory letter to Lee.

Lee logged more than 500 hours of community service in a 12-month period. Those hours include his service as member of Seattle Children’s Hospital Foundation’s “Circle of Care” and as a board member of the College Success Foundation. Lee also serves as an Advisory Council Board Member for:

• Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Puget Sound Affiliate,
• the Seattle Sounders,
• The Martinez Foundation, and
• the Bellevue Arts Museum

Lee also actively supports the Seattle Art Museum and Communities in Schools/Seattle, as well as Kin On Community Health Care and Nikkei Concerns, both elderly care facilities serving the Pacific Northwest.

Lee has a long history of volunteerism and philanthropic activities in the Pacific Northwest. Some notable examples in just the past decade: In 2004, then-Washington state Gov. Gary Locke appointed Lee to a six-year term to the Washington State Board for Architects. In January 2006, he received the C.J. Taylor award for “Outstanding Community Volunteer” from the National Komen Foundation, and in 2008 he received their “Power of One” award. In 2009, Lee was awarded the China Garden Philanthropic Award from The Seattle Chinese Garden, and in 2010 he received several community service awards from Kin On Community Health Care and Nikkei Concerns for serving as their honorary chair during their 35th year Gala Celebration. This year, the Seattle-based newspaper The International Examiner named Lee “Favorite Philanthropist.”
