First on West Coast Nonprofit Management Master’s Degree Offered

The University of Oregon joins a handful of major universities around the world this fall when it initiates a master’s degree in nonprofit management. “The nonprofit sector requires increasingly professionalized leaders who are up to the challenge of meeting society’s complex needs,” says Renee Irvin, associate professor. “The master of nonprofit management degree will prepare our students to do just that.” The program is offered by the planning, public policy and management (PPPM) department in the School of Architecture and Allied Arts.

Science, Residence Hall Construction Projects Make Summer Progress

The University of Oregon’s two largest ongoing construction projects remain on target, with exterior work moving quickly this summer on both the Lewis Integrative Science Building and the East Campus Residence Hall. Both are expected to be finished in fall 2012.

Molly Brown ’00 Turns Environmental Consciousness into a Thriving Business

When Molly Brown came to Ecuador as an exchange student from the University of Oregon, she had no idea she was meeting her future. She developed and now owns the environmentally conscious Casa Divina Lodge in Mindo, Ecuador. Located in the subtropical humid forest, better known as the cloud forest, of Ecuador in South America, the lodge serves travelers from all over the world and specializes in neo-tropical bird-watching tours.

Matt Hogan ’11 Knows Green Design

Matt Hogan knows green design, something the 2011 University of Oregon graduate is gaining recognition for quickly. In just the first five months of 2011, the architecture graduate student was awarded the Dean’s Graduate Fellowship at the UO School of Architecture and Allied Arts, was one of the few students selected to present research at the 2011 National Solar Conference and won the Architectural Research Centers Consortium’s (ARCC) King Student Medal for Excellence in Architectural and Environmental Design Research.

Newly minted University of Oregon graduates Nick Garcia and Kate MacFarland are defying the dismal nationwide employment picture: They are headed to Washington, D.C., for well-paying, demanding jobs for two years and, if all goes well, permanent career-track positions with the federal government.

Hands-on Learning in Biology Inspires Student to Give Back

UO student Stella Chiu spent her summer treating HIV/AIDs and tuberculosis patients in a South African clinic. Chiu visited Africa as part of an IE3 global internship with an organization called Child Family Health International. “I learned a lot about myself,” she says, “and about where my passions lie and how I aim to make a difference in this world.”

Scott William Carter ’94

Scott William Carter (BA, '94) won the prestigious 2011 Oregon Book Award for Young Adult Literature for his novel, The Last Great Getaway of the Water Balloon Boys (Simon and Schuster BFYR, 2010). Publishers Weekly called it "a touching and impressive debut" and Library Journal deemed it "a good choice for reluctant readers." His fantasy novel, Wooden Bones, chronicling the untold story of Pinocchio, will be published in the summer of 2012. He's also published over three dozen short stories and two collections.

Professors Sandra Morgan, Joan Acker and Jill Weigt

A book about poor families and welfare written by three feminist scholars — an anthropologist and two feminist sociologists — is a finalist for the prestigious C. Wright Mills Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems. Stretched Thin was written by Sandra Morgen, Joan Acker, and Jill Weigt and published by Cornell University Press in December 2010.

Architecture Professor Howard Davis

Davis’ latest book, Living Over the Store, explores “one of the most common urban buildings, the shop/house” in suburban Beijing, which combines dwellings with workspace. The book is slated for release January 2012 by British publisher Routledge. Davis also authored The Culture of Building (Oxford University Press, 1999, 2006), named Best Publication in Architecture and Urban Studies by the Association of American Publishers in 2000.

QB Costa Becomes Officer Costa

From jersey No. 7 to badge number 375, Nate Costa is starting a whole new ballgame.The former University of Oregon quarterback was sworn in as a Springfield police officer after completing a yearlong internship with the department. Near the end of his half-decade stint with the Ducks — punctuated by a series of season-ending knee injuries — Costa began job-shadowing Springfield detectives, going out on ride-alongs and getting mentally prepared to trade in green and yellow for navy blue. Hasay Becomes UO’s Third-Ever Academic All-American

The University of Oregon has its third-ever athlete to be chosen as a national Academic All-American of the Year. Jordan Hasay, a sophomore, was named the national Academic All-American of the Year for the sport of women’s track and field/cross country. Ducks Picked to Win Pac-12 Title

Defending Pac-12 champion Oregon is the choice to win the 2011 Pac-12 Conference football title in a preseason poll of media members who regularly cover the league. The Ducks were listed in the top spot in the North Division by 29 of the 42 voters participating in the poll, collecting 239 points. Twenty-eight of those pollsters tabbed the Ducks to come out on top in the inaugural Pac-12 Championship Game.

Journalist Peter Laufer now calls the University of Oregon home thanks to a new endowed chair funded by the estate of James and Haya Wallace. James Wallace, a 1950 UO journalism graduate, covered the Vietnam War for U.S. News & World Report and the Middle East and Cuba for The Wall Street Journal.

Bollywood Reporter Sangita Gopal

Assistant Professor Sangita Gopal has transformed the guilty pleasure of her childhood into an exploration of a global phenomenon. English, as an academic discipline, has long ceased to be the study of the traditional Western canon. At the UO, English majors today have a chance to focus on everything from world literatures to visual culture. “What is written or spoken in English, counts as English,” said Gopal.

Asst. Prof Gabriela Martinez Helps Acquire Latino Labor Organization's Archives

University of Oregon Knight Library Special Collections is the recent recipient of the historical collection of Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste (PCUN, in English, the Northwest Treeplanters and Farmworkers United, pronounced “pe-cune”), the 25-year-old Woodburn-based labor union. The collection consists of historic papers, including the organization's founding documents, leaflets, photographs and video.

Researchers Isolate Origin of Deadly Brain Cancer

A research team led by UO biologist Hui Zong has isolated the cellular origin of the deadly human brain cancer malignant glioma by using a mouse genetic system co-developed by researchers at the UO and Stanford University. The discovery that oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) are the point of origin was reported online in advance of regular publication late this month in the journal Cell. Researchers said the OPCs were the first cells to display “significant overexpansion and aberrant growth.”

Ron Stover ’59

A celebration of life party will be held in Portland later this month in memory of Ron Stover, one of the stars of the 1958 Rose Bowl game for the University of Oregon football team. Stover died June 15 in his home in Palm Desert, Calif., of a heart attack at age 75. (Photo: fanbase.com)

Lt. Col. Dr. Richard M. Bonalewicz, USAF Ret. (70) lost his battle with lung cancer June 3. He was an All-American athlete excelling in baseball, football and basketball.
