Dorm Life-Welcome New Students

imageFor Amelia Covarrubias, Thursday’s move-in day at the University of Oregon was familiar territory. Covarrubias’ youngest daughter, 18-year-old Janet Avila of Hood River, is her eighth child to go to college. But watching Avila, who wore her dormitory key on a green and yellow UO lanyard secured around her neck, load her last items into her room was nonetheless bittersweet. “It’s kind of sad,” said Covarrubias, whose comments in Spanish were translated by her daughter. “No one is left at home, but I am happy because she’s following her sisters’ footsteps.”

Graduates Join Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest

imageUniversity of Oregon alumni Samuel Higgins ’09 and Leslie Phillips ’09, have recently embarked on a year of full-time volunteer service with Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC) Northwest. These two graduates are part of the 123 total Northwest Jesuit Volunteers (JVs) who began their service in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon or Washington last month.

Their year kicked off with a weeklong orientation at Camp Adams in Molalla, Ore., and will continue through August 2010. “We’re excited these committed women and men are offering a year of their lives in service and working for the transformation of our world,” says Jeanne Haster, Executive Director for JVC Northwest.

The 54-year-old program supports volunteers living in community in 19 locations across the Northwest. Volunteers live in urban and rural locations in houses that each support four to eight volunteers. The current JVs work in many areas, including advocating for refugees, nursing in community clinics, teaching in schools on Native American Reservations, assisting in shelters, and organizing a local response to climate change. JVs are also immersed in the four core values of JVC throughout their service year - social justice, simple living, spirituality and community.

Duck Photo of the Month

imageA True Duck Fan

My name is Marilyn Savage Fine. My Dad, Ernie Savage of Salem, was a proud graduate of the University of Oregon class of 1938. He never missed a Duck game on TV or radio in all those years since and he loved the days when he had a ticket to attend in person.

This is a picture of his great-granddaughter, 15 month old Bayli Marie Thompson of Bend, dressed in her game day finest. My Dad had a children's shoe store in Salem for 45 years and did nothing but complain about how hard it was to fit shoes on his own children's web feet!

And the next generation is carrying on the tradition! Go Ducks!

New UOAA Chapter Initiated for Eastern Oregon

“Let’er Buck” and Let’er Duck.” These were the final words of new UO President Richard Lariviere’s address to over 200 University Alumni gathering before this year’s Pendleton Roundup. Most years, this event attracts loyal ducks excited to cheer on their favorite cowboy. While that certainly hasn’t changed, the September 2009 Presidential Reception held at Hamley’s Slickfork Saloon resonated with the energy of alumni support for education, the University and its students.
