Q & A with Hawaii Chapter President Patrice Li ’98
"One of my fondest memories at the UO was the first week of my freshman year in Dyment Hall. It was so exciting to meet new and interesting people from all over the country! Little did I know that some of those people would be there for me throughout my years at Oregon and become lifelong friends."
UOAA—could you describe what it is like volunteering for your local Chapter?
I love being part of the Hawaii Chapter! It is a great feeling to know that I am helping to keep the Duck spirit alive here in the middle of the Pacific.
UOAA—what do you enjoy most about being a part of the local Chapter?
I love the fact that our members come from many different backgrounds and walks of life, yet we’ve found a common bond in our dedication to the UO. I am always amazed at how comfortable all our members are with each other, whether they graduated in 1960s or last year.
UOAA—what qualities, experiences or opportunities do you most appreciate regarding your education at the University of Oregon?
Although I am no longer working in journalism, I greatly appreciate the basic foundation my journalism education provided me in my professional life. My education and experiences at the UO made me a better writer, a better listener and harder worker. What I learned at the UO gave me the confidence to know that I am capable of taking on any challenges that arise both in my personal and professional lives.
UOAA—What are some of the improvements or changes at the UO, UOAA or local chapter that you are most excited about?
I think it is always exciting to see our campus grow and evolve. When I visit the campus I love exploring the new buildings and learning about improvements to come! I am constantly amazed at how much the UO has changed since I graduated in 1998, yet somehow the feel and character of the campus stays the same. I think it is a truly wonderful thing that the UO has found ways to advance and thrive without sacrificing the very essence of what makes the UO so unique and special.
UOAA—Do you have a single contribution as a UO student or volunteer that you are most proud of?
Being an active part of our annual wine auction is one of the most rewarding things I’ve done. It feels good to know that my time and donations have helped raise money that will go towards helping students from Hawaii achieve their goals at the UO.
