Ford Alumni Center Construction Underway
Construction on the Ford Alumni Center is well underway in conjunction with the Matthew Knight Arena. The UO will be celebrating the alumni center’s construction launch with a gathering on May 21, 2010, 11:00 a.m., in the parking lot of the John E. Jaqua Center for Student Athletes.

Adventure Programs Welcome Community
As a student at the University of Oregon School of Law, James Cleavenger often took advantage of group wilderness trips organized through the Outdoor Program. After graduating last June, he wasn’t ready to give up the participant-initiated adventures.

"Green Stories: The Environment and the Media"
The School of Journalism and Communication is planning the 2010 John L. Hulteng Conversations in Ethics: "Green Stories: The Environment and the Media,” a one-day conference on Friday, May 14, 2010 at the George S. Turnbull Center at the UO Portland.
The conference begins at 9:00 a.m. with "Puberty on the Scale of a Planet: Why Global Warming Isn't the Story of Our Time and What Really Is,” a keynote address by noted environmental writer Andrew Revkin. Revkin explores his learning curve after two decades of covering the growing human imprint on the planet and proposes that a great untold story — the halting coming of age of a species currently locked in a teen-style spree —lies beneath the headlines on climate.

Ducks Giving
Strong Donations Buck National Trend
Despite a battered economy, the University of Oregon continues to attract multimillion dollar donations and is on track to have one of its top fundraising years. According to the latest figures released by the university, the UO brought in $75.6 million in the first seven months of its fiscal year, a pace that would easily surpass the goal of $90 million to $100 million a year if it can be sustained.

Eaton Breaks Decathlon Record, Again
For the second time in his career, Ashton Eaton surpassed the University of Oregon’s all-time decathlon record. In Memoriam
Former Professor Charles Dowd
Charles Dowd, principal timpanist of the Eugene Symphony for 35 years, died of pancreatic cancer on March 24th. He was 61 years old. Dowd, who also performed with the Oregon Bach Festival for many years, recently retired from the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance where he was a Philip H. Knight professor of music and a faculty performing artist.

Andrea Wiggins, Assistant Dean of Advancement for the College of Education, passed away at her home on March 5th. Andrea was a phenomenal fundraiser and advocate on behalf of the College of Education.

Researchers Find How Brain Hears the Sound of Silence
Think back to the most recent sound you’ve heard — and to the silence, however brief, that followed it. That noise-and-quiet sequence followed two different routes into your brain. A team of University of Oregon researchers has isolated an independent processing channel of synapses inside the brain’s auditory cortex that deals specifically with shutting off sound processing at appropriate times.

The Passing of the Platypus Trophy

The UO Student Alumni Association (SAA) has reinvigorated a long standing tradition between the Ducks and the Beavers; the passing of the Platypus Trophy. As many may, or may not know, it has been thought that a platypus is a combination of a duck and a beaver, at least the UO and OSU rivalry believes so! The Platypus Trophy was given to whichever school won the Civil War football game.
The SAA reclaimed the trophy this month and plans keep this tradition alive and well, and hopefully on the UO campus for many years to come!
