Reimagining the Public University
Dear UO Alumni:
I am writing to share the University of Oregon’s white paper, “Preserving Our Public Mission through a New Partnership with the State.” This is an effort to re imagine the public university and to reengage state support for the University of Oregon. At its heart, this is a proposal to keep the University of Oregon a public institution that serves Oregonians. I know that the question of how the University of Oregon preserves excellence, access, and affordability is of profound interest to our campus and to the University’s many alumni and supporters.

All-Guy A Cappella Group Now a Viral Hit
And you thought the "I Love My Ducks" video got a lot of hits online. Well, maybe you haven't met the guys from On the Rocks, the University of Oregon student-run, all-male a cappella group. The video someone shot of them three weeks ago at UO's Erb Memorial Union amphitheater, performing what has become their most popular routine, a mocking of pop star Lady Gaga's music video "Bad Romance," has been viewed more than 1.7 million times online.

Architecture Student Wins Award in National Competition
Portland, Oregon was one of five cities that design students across the U.S. could use for the 2009 American Institute of Architects Student (AIAS) design competition. With 162 entries submitted, University of Oregon architecture student, Hugh Bitzer, was chosen as second place in the national competition. Bitzer selected Portland as his site for the municipal courthouse design. The winning entries will be on exhibit at the AIA 2010 National Convention in Miami, Florida from June 10 to 12.

2010 Graduation: New Traditions, New Style
As you reflect back on one of the most treasured moments at the UO, it probably evokes a memory or two about graduating. The day you put on regalia, welcomed guests to campus and walked across the stage provided a ceremonial end to your time as an undergraduate and symbolized your official status as an alumnus of the UO. This year’s graduation on Monday, June 14 will be much different than years past.

Ph.D. Candidate Alison Altstatt Wins Prestigious Fellowship
Congratulations to Alison Altstatt, Ph.D. candidate in Musicology, who has been awarded the Alvin H. Johnson AMS 50 Dissertation Fellowship for the 2010-11 academic year. This prestigious fellowship, which provides support for a student in his or her final year, is awarded by the American Musicological Society, the flagship society for academic music scholars in North America. This is the first time that a UO student has received this award. Past recipients have come from Princeton, Harvard, University of Chicago, Cornell, Columbia, and the University of California–Berkeley.

Rosanna Bowles ’79 Company Garners Global Appeal
Accomplished designer Rosanna Bowles ’79 is an Oregon native and lives part time in Gearhart, OR. Rosanna started her successful dishware company in the Pacific Northwest in 1982 and since then has racked-up awards and honors, plus seen her dishes carried and covered around the globe, everywhere from the gift shop at Buckingham Palace to Oprah's "O List.”

Cornelis A. “Kees” de Kluyver ’70 MBA ’71 to Head Lundquist
A University of Oregon alumnus who has served as the Dean of two other business management schools has been chosen to head UO’s Lundquist College of Business. Cornelis A. “Kees” de Kluyver will take over as the Lundquist dean on Sept. 1. He will replace Dennis Howard, who was hired in July 2008 for a two-year appointment.

Ask New Orleans Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis '79 what people involved with the National Football League (NFL) think of University of Oregon football, and he'll answer: Respect.
"I'm completely happy with the direction my career has taken," said Loomis. Everybody in the NFL knows they're lucky, but sometimes you forget that you have a pretty good deal going. A lot of it is being in the right place at the right time."

LiDoña Wagner’s M.A.’06 Statewide Pilgrimage Exhibition
Wagner received her master's degree in literary nonfiction from UO's School of Journalism and Communication in 2006 and received first prize in Oregon Quarterly's 2007 Northwest Perspectives essay contest. As an active exhibiting artist, her Pilgrimage Exhibition is making a statewide tour, currently at the Grants Pass Museum of Art. The Pilgrimage series is based on her experiences in 15 different countries where she lived and worked.

My DuckStory: Lynae Nelson
Masters student Lynae Nelson seems wise beyond her years. Indeed, at first glance it would be easy to mistake the petite, elfin young woman as an undergraduate. But once you spend a few minutes with Lynae, you immediately become aware that you are speaking to not only a hard-working student, but a loving wife and mother, and an extremely well-grounded public servant.

Chip Kelly Supports Troops on USO Overseas Tour
Chip Kelly was one of five NCAA bowl subdivision football coaches that took part in the “Coaches Tour 2010” overseas trip to visit U.S. men and women serving in the armed forces. The 10-day trip, sponsored by the USO (United Service Organizations) and Under Armour in conjunction with Armed Forces Entertainment, is in its third year of providing entertainment, relief from the rigors of active duty and an expression of gratitude and support for military troops serving in Europe and Asia.

Ducks Sweep Pac-10 Track Titles
Oregon’s track and field teams unleashed unprecedented performances in defending their Pacific-10 Conference track and field titles Sunday at Edwards Stadium. The women rolled to victories in the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1,500 and 5,000 meters, as well as the 4x100 meter relay, to shatter the meet record with 215 points. That was 106 points better than second-place Arizona’s 109. Arizona State was third with 89.5, followed by USC with 89, Stanford with 88, UCLA with 71.5, California with 55.5, Washington State with 52 and Washington with 47.5.

Dana Altman Selected as Men’s Basketball Coach
Dana Altman, who has accumulated 13-consecutive post-season tournament appearances and 11-straight 20-win seasons in 16 seasons at Creighton University, has been named head men’s basketball coach at the University of Oregon, according to the school’s Interim Athletic Director Lorraine Davis.

University of Oregon Support Services for Student-Athletes and the women's basketball program hosted a short ceremony to honor sophomore forward Amanda Johnson for her Academic All-American award on Monday at the John E. Jaqua Academic Center.

Condon Paleontological Curators Complete Oregon Fossils Book
I n December, 2009, Elizabeth and William Orr, Curator and Codirector of the Condon Paleontological Collection, completed the second edition of their book, Oregon Fossils. This work is a very thorough review of Oregon’s fossil plant and animal remains, first published in 1999. Richly illustrated with several hundred photographs and line drawings, the book relies heavily on the Condon paleontology collection for its history and details of prehistoric specimens.

Portraits by Andy Warhol and Gus Van Sant at the JSMA
Behind a Polaroid camera Andy Warhol and Gus Van Sant probed innumerable acquaintances and strangers in the process of crafting their art—Warhol’s paintings and screenprints of people and objects and Van Sant’s characters in film. Warhol’s portraits were transformed into iconic Pop images. Van Sant’s Polaroid pictures helped him cast characters for his films. In reflection these one-step photographs became indelible images.

Resources for Student Veterans
The Veterans and Family Student Association was founded by UO student veterans to provide fellowship, support, peer tutoring, counseling and other services to student veterans. The UO Office of Veterans Affairs within the Office of the Registrar helps eligible student veterans, reservists, and dependents obtain educational benefits in compliance with the procedures and regulations of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

Professor and Graduate Student Making Waves
Picture a naturally-illuminated room. Now picture its light imbued with the soothing movement of water. Staff and patients at the Women’s Care office on Country Club Parkway in Eugene have seen that picture for awhile now — ever since a “water light shelf” designed by University of Oregon architecture professor Kevin Nute and graduate student Aaron Weiss was installed outside a window of the fertility clinic.

Oregon Law Green Mile Challenge Exceeds Goal
Oregon Law students achieved a whopping 103,549 total miles of alternative transportation throughout the spring semester in the inaugural Green Mile Challenge, far exceeding the 50,000-mile goal. All three sections of Property, a first-year course, taught by Professors Mary Wood, Richard Hildreth, and Eric Priest, along with Professor Wood's American Indian Policy seminar, competed amongst one another for top honors.
