It was no small thing on October 17 when the Oregon Ducks found themselves atop the Associated Press and USA Today polls — decided by college football sportswriters and coaches, respectively — for the first time in the school’s history.

University of Oregon students — as well as millions of YouTube viewers — know all about On the Rocks, and how fun and how infectious their music is. Soon, the rest of the country will get a chance to see how the all-male a cappella group from the UO stacks up against other singing groups from across the country.

Donors and Guests View Progress on Lewis Integrative Science Project
University of Oregon President Richard Lariviere and Rich Linton, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, led a reception Oct. 21 that officially recognized both the start of construction of the $65 million Lewis Integrative Science Building and the key donors behind the building and the already completed Lorry I. Lokey Laboratories.

Courthouse Garden Integrates Parolees Back into Society
Showers may keep you inside, but some Eugene residents dug out their gardening tools to help harvest the Courthouse Garden. Working side by side with UO students and community members, the goal of the garden was to help integrate former inmates back into the community.

Residence Hall Staff Trains For Diversity
For two days in September, the entire University of Oregon residence hall staff — over 100 students and professionals — was asked to focus on a core value of the university: creating an atmosphere that is welcoming and inclusive for all students.

November 4th-20th, 2010, the American Red Cross, Lane Memorial Blood Bank, Oregon State University Alumni Association and the University of Oregon Alumni Association will take part in a statewide, two-week campaign to increase community blood donations prior to the critical holiday period.

Anderson Franklin is recipient of the 2010 Outstanding Alumnus Award from the University Of Oregon College Of Education Advocacy Council. Outstanding alumni are recognized for exceptional contributions to education or other fields. This year's honored recipient was invited to campus to speak at the College of Education Orientation.

Lifetime Educator Esther McCarty ’47 Celebrates Her 100th
Centenarian and College of Education alumna Esther McCarty '47 was honored with a standing ovation from 190 dinner guests during an anniversary gathering September 17, 2010. A lifetime educator in Eugene, Springfield, and Minnesota public schools since 1927, McCarty began her career teaching in a one-room school house. She attended the celebration with her daughters, also graduates of the College of Education: Edythe McCarty (1959) and Mary Ellen Christian (1966).

Cross Country Team Raising Breast Cancer Awareness
The University of Oregon Cross Country Team showed their support for breast cancer awareness at the Bill Dellinger Invitational meet on October 16. Both the mens' and womens' teams wore special uniforms with Oregon in pink letters and the athletes said they were inspired by NFL players wearing pink. They pitched the idea to their coach and a week later saw their new uniforms donated by Nike.

Former Quarterback Jernstedt Earns Legacy Award
Tom Jernstedt, the former University of Oregon quarterback and athletics administrator who went on to become a powerful figure in the management of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, will receive the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame Legacy Award at the organization’s annual awards dinner in New York City in December.

UO Alums Create Healthy Democracy Oregon
Elliot Shuford and Tyrone Reitman, the co-directors of Healthy Democracy Oregon, began as colleagues in the University of Oregon's public policy master's program. They formed the nonprofit in 2007 and its staff is made up of almost exclusively UO alums. Its mission is to reform the initiative process in the state through citizen review of ballot measure.

Exchange Student Linda Norgrove
When Dean and Lucile McKenzie of Eugene think back on Linda Norgrove, they remember a young woman who wanted to try everything. There was the time that Norgrove, then an exchange student from Scotland enrolled at the University of Oregon, saw climbers ascending the basalt columns at Skinner Butte Park. “I want to do that,” she said instantly.

Peter Jamison ’66
Production Designer Peter M. Jamison died October 15, 2010, of complications from heart disease at his home in Venice, CA. He was 66. The production designer of over 36 films, his credits include At Close Range, Best Defense, Continental Divide, Empire Records, Howard the Duck, Mike’s Murder, Missing, Old Boyfriends, Point Break, RoboCop 2, Swing Shift, The Beverly Hillbillies, Tin Men, Used Cars, and Weekend at Bernie’s.
