It's been a big year for the University of Oregon: the Ducks are number one in football, and student enrollment has set another record."This year's record enrollment simply builds on the past few years of record enrollment," said Vice Provost for Enrollment Management Roger Thompson.

University to Honor Four Academic All-Americans
University of Oregon President Richard Lariviere and Director of Athletics Rob Mullens recognized Oregon's four most recent national Academic All-Americans in a ceremony November 5 at the John E Jaqua Center.

Wes Sullivan ’43
The late Wes Sullivan, an editor and columnist in Salem for 56 years, was inducted into the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication's Hall of Achievement on November 5th. Sullivan, a 1943 graduate of UO, joined The Oregon Statesman, a predecessor of the Statesman Journal, after returning from service in World War II. He rose through the ranks to become associate editor in 1968, editor in 1975 and then chairman of the editorial board in 1980.

Kenneth Hirsch PhD ’69
Kenneth William Hirsch ’69, born June 15, 1932, in Chicago, Ill., died June 16, 2010, in Napa. Ken was a professor of communication studies at California State University, Sacramento. His research primarily focused on the effects on children of violence in the media, and on effective communication in HIV-prevention programs.

Patricia Rushton ’62
Patricia Rushton ’62 made a peaceful transition in her home in Santa Barbara on Saturday, July 31, 2010 after a brave journey with cancer. Her father, age 92, was by her side. Patricia leaves behind her father Roy Rushton, her brothers Richard and Ron Rushton, their wives, six nephews, and eight great-nephews and nieces. Born in Medford, OR, she graduated from UO in 1962 with a BA in Art History, studied painting at SF Art Institute, and then pursued architecture at firms in San Francisco and New York.

Bennett T. Huffman MFA ’89
Bennett T. Huffman studied and wrote with author Ken Kesey at the University of Oregon which resulted in the completion of his MFA in creative writing in 1989. Continuing his education, Mr. Huffman attended the University of Liverpool, earning a master’s degree in 1997 in British Literature, during which time he completed his thesis, “The Aesthetics of Mortality in the Middle English Lyric; and, in 2001, he earned his PhD in American Literature, titling his dissertation, “Fictional Forms and Social Visions in the Works of Ken Kesey.”

Amanda Marshall ’92
President Barack Obama has named S. Amanda Marshall ’92 to serve as U.S. attorney for the District of Oregon. Marshall is in charge of the Child Advocacy Section of the Oregon Department of Justice, a position she has held since earlier this year. Previously, she served as Assistant Attorney in Charge of the Child Advocacy Section beginning in 2008 and as an Assistant Attorney General beginning in 2001. From 1996 to 2001, Marshall worked as a Deputy District Attorney for the Coos County District Attorney’s Office.
Monica Harrington ’82
Monica Harrington’s company, Intersect, was the talk of Web 2.0 Expo in New York City this fall. Intersect adds a social, storytelling aspect to neighborhoods. Users can upload photos and stories about anything in their lives, linking the posts to a specific date and location. Stories can be shared with the whole site or with specific groups.

Ducks Win Civil War Blood Drive
The results are in. Duck fans outnumbered Beaver fans in this year's Civil War Blood Drive. More than 8,000 blood donations were collected during the annual event from Nov. 4th-20th. The end result was Ducks 4,482 - Beavers 3,903.

Game Day Recycling Program Hits New High
The University of Oregon’s 10-year-old game day recycling program reached a milestone at the Oct. 23 UCLA football game by diverting 42 percent of the 78,996 pounds of waste collected that day at Autzen Stadium.

Oregon’s Pursuit of Perfection Continues
It is not all that far from the University of Oregon to the University of Phoenix Stadium. The site of the BCS National Championship Game is within the footprint of the Pacific-10 Conference. But if you measure the journey by how far the Oregon Ducks have come in the last 25 years, you would understand the giddiness that enveloped a few otherwise business-like men Saturday evening outside the Oregon locker room.

All Things LaMichael James
Running back LaMichael James, who was named to Pac-10 All Academic team last month, took a trip to the Big Apple, having been named one of four finalists for the Heisman Trophy. The sophomore All-America from Texarkana, Texas, is the nation’s leading rusher with 1,682 yards and also tops the NCAA in scoring, averaging two touchdowns (12.0 points) per game.

Early in a game last month against Washington, a running back for the University of Oregon’s powerhouse football team darted through a small opening on the right side of the line, then cut smartly upfield for a seven-yard gain and a first down. A typical-enough play, and good for the home team.

Public Records Officer Fulfills Hopes of Creating Transparency
When University Public Records Officer Elizabeth Denecke walked into her Johnson Hall office for her first day of work on Oct. 11, dozens of backlogged records requests lay waiting for her keen attention. Since the June 1 creation of the University's Office of Public Records, the office's staff members have expedited the process by which the institution makes its internal information available to the public.

Chip Kelly wins Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award
One day after his team was selected to play in the BCS championship game, University of Oregon head coach Chip Kelly was presented with the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award by the Football Writers Association of America.
