Help out the SAA

It’s year 3 for the SAA! As we just keep getting bigger and bigger, more and more people have been volunteering with our events. In the fall we had a lot of fun setting up the Mo Center, and this term with Casino Night and Speed Networking there was plenty of places for our members to get involved. We really hope that you have been having all the fun that we have throughout the year, even if it was just helping us fold some of our Beat-Ts. The SAA wouldn’t be what it has become in these last 3 years if it wasn’t for all of our volunteers, and with a brand new year just around the corner there are more activities to come! Many of our team leaders and graduating next term and so we are now looking for new SAA members to be a part of our team. Any SAA volunteer will tell you how much fun it is to help out during our events, and we would love to have you. This next term we are planning on having some fun events through the term and would really love to get some of you involved with the behind the scenes of the SAA. If you want to help out or just want to see what our next event is, you can email us as uosaa@uoregon.edu or stop by our office at the Ford Alumni Center.

Another Season of Beat T's

Beat Cal FoldingOne big perk of being in the SAA is the Beat-T’s we get for every home game! If we don’t say so ourselves, this year’s design was the best one yet! We’re hoping they’ll just keep getting better! If you have any design ideas or input about what you want to see next year, let us know! We’re also going to try to correlate the color of our shirts with the color the Duck Store is having the students wear, next year. One thing that really helped us this year was the volunteers that came and helped us fold the shirts! Next year, we could use MORE hands because we’re getting MORE members, which means MORE shirts!

Moshofsky Center Set-up (Mo Center)

Being a part of the SAA means we get to partake in some really cool events! Setting up the Moshofsky Center was one of them this year, and we’ll have the same opportunity next year! We had the chance to go into the Mo Center the night before home games, and put up tables tents on the tables! It’s really cool to see the whole center in the commotion of being set up! We had a lot of volunteers help us this year, and we’re hoping you’ll get in contact with us next year to help us!

Philanthropy at Oregon

The school year has begun! And with that, student fundraisers from the Annual Giving Program are also gearing up. During the fall season, students call donors ranging from 2011 grads to the classes that were here with the famous Steve Prefontaine. Every year University of Oregon graduates show just how much they care by making donations making things a lot easier at the UO. Here are some examples of donated Funds and what they pay for:

Behind the Scenes--Mo Center

The crisp sent of fall, seas of green and yellow, and hours of chanting “GO DUCKS” has come. But it is the 52,000+ Duck fans yelling “OOOOO” and the rain that never comes to Autzen that really makes a Saturday. However, what many people don’t realize is that before the best part of the weekend comes groups of people work hard the night before to make sure Duck football can flow just right.

The SAA goes in the day before the game and gets behind the scene access to the Moshofsky Center. We not only see how the Athletic department prepares for one of the largest half-time hangouts in Eugene, we help set it up.

Wanna get in on the action? Wanna get some great volunteering experience on your resume? E-mail the SAA at uosaa@uoregon.edu

Unpack the Quack

Thursday, September 22nd held a buzz over the University of Oregon campus as the Class of 2015 moved in. After a great summer in Eugene for those upper classmen whom had stayed behind, September 22nd filled the campus with the electricity that comes with Fall term. Even though classes didn't start until the 26th, move in day is the start of the year for many University students.
And this year Unpack the Quack is what started the 2011-2012 school year off right. With over 400 volunteers ranging from students to Eugene community members, Unpack the Quack moved the students into their residence halls quickly and effectively.

Two Student Groups Visit the New Call Center

BuildOn ChapterThe BuildOn chapter, a group from the Holden Leadership Center came to the Annual Giving Program’s Call Center (now located behind the HLC) to learn how students raise money for academics at UO.

Currently, BuildOn is raising money to further their mission of breaking the cycle of illiteracy. Some annual giving callers are already involved with the BuildOn chapter, but there were other BuildOn members who did not understand exactly what the Call Center does and got a first had look as to who provides funds for students.

Those who came were surprised that REAL students are the ones who go about fundraising - others didn’t even know that the Call Center existed!
In addition to the visit from BuildOn, the UO Equestrian team has come to check out the call center. Like BuildOn, the equestrian team was also impressed with the call center and some members even applied for jobs afterwards!

A Year Wrap Up

SAAThis year has been one to remember!

We started our recruitment during the summer’s IntroDUCKtion where we gained over 1,000 new members! We had two successful member nights at the Duck Store where members brought a friend and both got to shop at the Duck Store and received a 20% discount off an entire purchase! We unveiled a new beat-t design and enjoyed seeing them at games and on T.V.

We held the 9th annual Civil War Blood Drive where we finally beat OSU!!

Our Ducks went to the 2011 National Championship Game against Auburn! And more than 30,000 people attended the UO Pep Rally in Arizona!

On Thursday, February 10th we celebrated the 2nd annual Oregon Made Possible (OMP). This was a great reminder to all students about who is really paying for our education. Students fill out thank you cards to first time donors, expressing to them the thanks in supporting our education, and received a raffle to be entered to win an iPad.

This was such a great year and we have our wonderful members to thank! We hope you all enjoy your summer and come back next fall excited to start another year full of fun activities!

Surveys DO Pay Off

Duck Prize BasketThanks to all of the SAA members who participated in the end of the year survey! This survey gives the SAA Leadership team great ideas about how we can better serve our members next year.

The survey included things about our overall performance, what you liked the best about the SAA and things you would like to see next year. As always we like to have a little incentive for helping the SAA, this time one of our members won a Duck prize basket just for filling out the survey.  We got a lot of feedback and you’ll definitely see your voices in next years’ events.

If you have any more suggestions or would like to be more involved in the club, let us know at uosaa@uoregon.edu !

The New Partnership: Stabilizing UO's future

Whether you agree with the proposal or not is up to you, but as students it’s important for us to be as informed as possible because we are the ones being affected by this the most. Do you have a problem with how high and unstable tuition is? Do you care about who gets to say what is done with your money and general UO policy issues? If so it is vital that you understand what the New Partnership is all about.

Paying it Forward

It’s sometimes hard to know the impact of giving, because the benefits don’t always become obvious right away. But without alumni and friends of the university understanding how important it is to give back, our student lives would be much different.

One example of the power of giving is scholarships. Have you ever received a scholarship from UO? It’s more than likely that was possible because someone donated the money for it. The Pathway Oregon Scholarship, for instance, supported 415 students last year. This year, with the generous help from donors, supports over 600 students. That is a lot of lives changed because of the kindness of past Ducks.

UO New Partnership- What's it all about and how does it effect you?

Are you tired of watching student tuition increase almost 8% every year? Did you know that if we continue on our current path, tuition at state universities in Oregon could reach nearly $18,000 per year? Currently the Oregon Legislature is considering more cuts to the Oregon University System, and will consider up to an 8% increase in tuition this year.
