SAA Bleeds Green: 2010 Civil War Blood Drive

Between November 4th-20th, 2010, the American Red Cross, Lane Memorial Blood Bank, Oregon State University Alumni Association and the University of Oregon Alumni Association will take part in a statewide, two-week campaign to increase community blood donations prior to the critical holiday period.

This is the ninth consecutive year of the award-winning partnership. Fans, students and alumni of both universities are encouraged to donate on behalf of their team November 4-20 at any American Red Cross or Lane Memorial Blood Bank blood drive in Oregon. The university with the most submitted ballots will be announced on this site prior to the Civil War game in Corvallis on December 4th.

Every day, there are people who count on blood to be available to help save lives. Accident victims, premature babies, people undergoing cancer treatment, organ recipients, and many others rely on the generosity of blood donors to ensure that blood is available when it's needed.

In order to assure that blood is available when someone needs it, healthy people are asked to donate blood regularly throughout the year. By donating blood at a Civil War Blood Drive you help ensure a constant and adequate blood supply for all those who may be in need. Your donation could help give a friend, a neighbor, or a member of your community another chance at life.

Every blood type is needed all the time. Common blood types are needed by the many patients who can use those types, while rare blood types are often in short supply. Donations are usually in short supply during the summer months and winter holiday season. Civil War blood donors help ensure that organizations like American Red Cross Blood Services and Lane Memorial Blood Bank can continue to help save lives.

This friendly competition between both state universities brings fans and alumni throughout Oregon to local blood drives and helps raise the awareness of the constant need for blood across our region.

Every student that donates blood will receive a 20% off coupon to the Duck Store for an entire purchase (no textbooks or electronics, sorry). We will be posting daily updates of the competition between the schools and that can be found on the Civil War Blood Drive website, www.civilwarblooddrive.com.

Five Reasons For Giving Blood

It’s convenient and easy.
It takes about an hour to give the gift of life. The actual blood donation time is only about 7-10 minutes.

It's a chance to become someone’s hero.
You may give a newborn, a child, a mother or a father, a brother or a sister another chance at life. You may also help to ensure blood is there when you, or someone close to you, may need it. Most people don’t think they’ll ever need blood, but many do. More than 38,000 donations are needed every day to help people in communities across the United States.

Your donation could help save a life.
Your blood donation is a precious gift. And because blood can not be manufactured, patients in need count on donors like you to help ensure that it is available. You can give every 56 days and some donors choose to give as often as possible, up to six times a year!

You have a rare blood type.
Rare or special blood is almost always in short supply. There is a constant need for these blood types, especially O negative. But blood recipients come in all blood types so blood donors of all types are needed. The rarest type is the one that isn't available when it's needed.

It’s the right thing to do.
Do we really need to say more?
